SUMDAY

Year: 2013-2017
Role:
Illustration & Animation
Brief:
Create 1 artwork every week

Back in 2013, I initiated SUMDAY, which is a portmanteau of "Summary" and "Sunday". During one of our church's Life Access Sunday sermons, which used to be bustling and vibrant, I noticed that it had lost its spark. I pondered over the reasons for so many people leaving and couldn't just sit idly by. So, together with a group of creative minds, we launched SUMDAY. Each individual was provided with a sketchbook, and we employed amusing and daring designs to portray biblical texts and stories. We continued this for a full year, culminating in a 52-week series.

Given that some individuals lost interest in attending church, we brainstormed ways to take the church to them. We hit upon the idea of posting a summary of each sermon every Monday on Facebook and Instagram (where most individuals congregate nowadays), enabling those who missed it to have a quick recap. Each poster features a tagline, which alludes to the topic of the sermon, as well as a reference to the corresponding Bible verse.

Social media

Upon completing the initial 52 weeks, we resolved to elevate the level of intrigue and complexity by animating the subsequent 52 designs. You can peruse all the designs and animations at https://untilsumday.tumblr.com.

Exhibition

Upon completing the 52 weeks of crafting the visuals, we hosted an annual Christmas exhibition. A multitude of individuals attended to relish the posters, and we distributed Christmas cards for them to share with their loved ones.
